Paul, alas, passed away last night in his aquarium in Germany. He died of old age. He is an ex octopus, is bereft of life etc etc.

The prophetic cephalopod correctly called all of Germany's results during the World Cup, including their defeat.

Well, that's the thing with football finals, they're usually not that good, especially the big ones (world cup, european, champions league). both teams want to win so badly that it often gets locked down and very rough.

The Spanish government have offered €38,000 for Paul, a record soccer fee for an octopus according to AP.

The Spanish, who say they fear that the Germans will eat him, will rename him Paulo and will use him as a mascot.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero today told a Spanish radio station that he feared for the octopus' safety.

He said: "I am concerned for the octopus … I am thinking of sending him a protective team."
