Great article- both the 'satanice verses' and the jyllands-posten affairs have shown just how stupid, gullible and dangerous religious fanatics can be. never mind that they hadn't read the book. to them, there's no need to read an 'offending' text when they can just get one of their leaders spew out a load of misinformation about it and whip them up into a murderous frenzy. All the latest scandals about the catholic church, plus the situation in Iran/pakistan/isreal/gaza is enough to convince me that religion needs to go.pronto. i envision a world without it, although i'm not going to hold my breath!

Vlad -- That's because the Swiss guards are in the Vatican and we were talking about the Pope.

You really need to relax. Not everyone thinks Sweden and Switzerland are the same place.

Seconds Out, why are you talking about Swiss guards when Lars Vilks is Swedish? Sweden and Switzerland are pretty far apart.

Ironic, isn't it, that just when we are starting to slowly prise open the grip of one bunch of religious nutters in this country, we start to also se the rise of another waiting in the wings.

One of Ireland's Islamic leaders has said he is not surprised that there could be Islamic fundamentalist groups operating here.

Ali Abdullah al-Saleh, Imam to the Shia community in Ireland, has said that some Islamic educators are brainwashing young people.

Meantime, the Irish government are in cahoots with the Saudis and planning to open a school in Dublin for such Islamic educators.

Let's say I draw a picture of a dog witha bearded mans head, a,d a turban but I don't specificaly say what it is. I let people "interpret" what it means.
Now say some one over at jihad.com sees this and decides a fatwah is in order. Aren't these mulums guilty of insulting the prophet? I mean if I didn't say it was mohammed, that means they interpreted a picture of a man/dog with a turban to be a depiction of the prophet of islam, and surely by their own standards they should commit suicide.

Could this logic be used in any of the cartoons that are at issue?

That picture: Apart from the face and the ears it looks quite like my doggie. She might take offence being ridiculed by being assimilated with a ratzfatz-image. She might swear to kill you...
Though my she-doggie is more relaxed about it. She doesn't read your blog anyway. She prefers to read the small print on doggy-treat-cartons. That's a kind of James Joyce for canines.

Anyway. Religious zealots are everywhere. Among them there is no mature point of view, whatever religion they claim to defend. Even buddhist monks are full of themselves, as I experienced in the far east.

Every religion is about power, more so when in monotheistic (that is patriarchalic and hence male-domintated) religions. The intention or the will to kill is not a muslim thing alone. The catholic church killed probably more people for lesser reasons than the muslims in their respective history.

What irks us westerners though is that the muslims are going on with it while the christians can't do it anymore, thanks to modern world facilities and enforced legal morals.

Ratzifatzi was head of the holy inquisition (under a different name nowadays). But I can imagine, no I'm sure, he would burn the odd woman or heretic (whatever he thinks is a heretic) happily on the stakes, if only they would let him. Bloody democracy , innit Ratzi?
