I'm a non-admirer of the feeble article linked above, with its phony-sounding praise from unattributed kidnap victims, lazy Robin Hood comparisons and pathetic dismissal of the fact that this guy appears to hang around with murderers.
Saddam used his illegally acquired wealth to buy off the peasants in his home town, purely out of self-interest. Should we admire him too? Give me enough cash and I'll get meself out of jail too, with enough left over to set up a PR machine to spin a few myths and have people going "Man, that's like totally awesome, dude!" around the interweb.
Still, Vassilis appears to be an effective organiser, which is more than you can say for the sacks of shit we have running Ireland.
Just like Charlie, Bertie and their pals in FF and Anglo. They will evade prison and be reveered by their peers. One small difference they stole from the little people and kept ALL the money, mind you Martin Cullen seems to be copying the helicopter stunt.
Just a thought: what would have happened if the family of the rich guy Vassilis Paleokostas kidnapped had refused to pay the ransom? Would Paleokostas have patted him on the head and let him go free? Or started sending fingers in the mail? Methinks, as AJC said, there's a wee bit of mythologising going on here…
