Very poetic, Bock, but you don't have the full story on Saddam. He always knew he was a puppet and obeyed every whim of the Americans. Unfortunately for him the puppeteer was psychotic.

In 1980 the yanks told Saddam to attack Iran, so he did. But by 1990 the yanks had grown tried of him. They told him to attack Kuwait. And when he did, they turned on him.

After Iraq had been decimated, the yanks kept him in power, keeping him advised to potential coups and giving him the weapons to deal with them.

Then the psychotic puppeteer changed its mind again and invaded. Saddam was constantly trying to appease the yanks - he even offered to go into exile and allow the Americans to invade without resistance. The yanks told him they'd shoot down his plane if he tried to leave.

Saddam didn't really make any mistakes. He was a plaything for the Americans and had no option but to live or die by their whim.
